Club of Young Naturalists
(Fiatalok Természetismereti Klubja)
Our mission is to make the youth realize the importance of the protection of our environment by expanding their knowledge. We want to give them something, which they couldn’t get from general education. We think that the most effective way is to use someone’s own experience for the acquisition of knowledge.
The Club was founded in 1979 by some members of the Hungarian Biological Society and the Hungarian Natural History Museum. Their aim was assuring the replacement of experts in the field of biology by organising lectures, trips and other outdoor activities for students of secondary schools and universities. Most leaders were members of the Museum, e.g. Pál Agócsy, Zoltán Korsós, Tamás Vásárhelyi. Due to the strict connection between the Club and the Museum, our members were able to build relationships with the Museum’s experts; in addition, they got professional help for completing their own work.
Although this connection still exists, field activities and research have come into view in recent years. We were one of the starters of the Hungarian river-monitoring network. We worked up trips and other field tasks for schools and other organisations. We participated in actions of environmental protection. Our complex activities were acknowledged with PRO NATURA Award in 1992.
We are a member of YEE (Youth and Environment Europe)
Our programs are not only about research; environmental education is also included. Participants can learn methods that can be easily applied in secondary education.
To participate in our Club’s activities is a good opportunity
- to thrive your knowledge in natural history,
- to know better our natural surroundings and to learn easily methods to present it to others even to children,
- to join in some field research,
- to do something for the protection of nature, or even
- to take part in a joyful community.
